| The League began its affiliation with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS), which later changed its name to USA Hockey in June 1991. Until this season, the League followed the playing rules established by the National Federation of State High School Associations. |
| With AHAUS affiliation in place, the IHSHL can now send a single, all-star team composed of the League’s top players to compete in April in the Chicagoland area. This is the first time IHSHL athletes will take part in the event, marking a major milestone in the league’s development and visibility. The Chicago Showcase allows high school players from around the country, not traditionally scouted, the chance to be seen by every major hockey program in the United States. |
| The League adopts a formal Jr. Varsity program to provide greater structure. Top-Ten scorers, Silver-Glove goaltenders and Team Sportsmanship Award are recognized for the first time at the Jr. Varsity tournament. |
| The Jr. Varsity tournament is held at the Sioux City Municipal Auditorium for the first time. |
| The fifth-annual All-Star game is hosted by the Omaha Gladiators, Tuesday, January 23, marking the first time the event is held outside of Iowa. The game is played at AK-SAR-BEN Coliseum in Omaha before the United States Hockey League All-Star Game. |
 Waterloo Warriors and Waterloo Columbus co-hosted the Varsity Year-End Tournament at McElroy Auditorium, March 1-4, 1990.The banquet was held Saturday night at Waterloo's Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. Waterloo Mayor Bernie McKinley provided opening remarks. Master of Ceremonies was Liz Mathis, news anchor for KWWL-TV.  This marks the first year Sioux City has hosted the Junior Varsity Year-End Tournament. The event was held at the Sioux City Municipal Auditorium, March 10-12, 1990.The League formally adopts a structured Junior Varsity program, establishing clearer organization and consistent standards for JV competition. To further recognize excellence at this level, the League introduces several new awards beginning this season. Certificates of recognition will be presented to the Top-10 Scoring Leaders, determined by total goals and assists during the regular season; the Top-3 Silver-Glove Goaltenders, ranked by regular-season save percentage; and the Sportsmanship Award, given to the team accumulating the fewest penalty minutes over the course of the JV regular season.
