Up until 2002, the Junior Varsity tournament was held the week before the Varsity tournament. In 2002 Dubuque was scheduled to host the Varsity tournamnet the second week in March following the Jr. Varsity tournament the week before. Due to a scheduling conflict, Dubuque was unable to host the event the second weekend in March. It was voted to flip the tournaments and play the Varsity tournament first allowing Dubuque to host the Varsity event. The new format became the preferred order and continued into the futurre. |
The length of periods for regular-season Junior Varsity games was extended to 14 minutes. |
Ames began play in the newly constructed Ames/ISU Ice Arena. |
During the Jr. Varsity tournament at Waterloo's Young Arena, the longest Jr. Varsity game was recorded. It took the Waterloo Warriors 6 overtime periods in a consolation semifinal game to edge the Omaha Jr. Lancers, 3-2. Waterloo's Dustin Quess scored the game winner with an assist from Derek Weller at 2:55 of the sixth overtime. |
The Dubuque Devils hosted the Varsity year-end tournament at the Five Flags Center, March 1-3, 2002. On Saturday night, all eight teams, plus parents and fans, made their way through blowing and drifting snow to the Dubuque County Fairgrounds for the annual awards banquet. Troy Ward, VP of Operations for the East Coast Hockey League and an 18-year veteran of coaching hockey, including assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penquins, was the guest speaker. |
